Spirit of Burgas 2011 - Day 3
MAIN STAGE
The last day of "Spirit of Burgas" 2011 started with the Bulgarian alternative rock band PYROMANIA, lead by Dimitar Vasilev - Nufry, who performed at JDRA the previous night as front man of BASTARDOLOMEY. Formed in the middle of the 90es and being "on pause" for the last 15 years, the band re-united in April 2011. This is also their first time on SPIRIT OF BURGAS. PYROMANIA's gig was an hour full of fire, metal and riffs that impressed even the significantly younger fans in front of the MS and won them a lot of new fans.
Short before 9 p.m., SKINDRED appeared on the scene accompanied by the "20th Sentury Fox" theme and the scandings of the crowd. The Welsh rock band from Newport was formed in 1998 following the disbandment of vocalist Benji Webbe's previous band, Dub War. SKINDRED's musical style mixes alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock and reggae. The band also integrate elements of dancehall, hardcore, ska, hip hop, drum and bass, dubstep and various other influences into their music also known as "ragga metal". Benji Webbe himself is known by the true metal fans as being a guest artist in albums of BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE and SOULFLY, as well replacing Jonathan Davis (KORN) at "Download" Festival in London in 2006. In Burgas, the incredible Bendji created a great show and unleashed his power over the fans. The usual games with the public and the “sing along” sessions were funny and managed to fire the flame in the heart of the fans, who started gathering for the headliner of the night – the Californian neo metal gods DEFTONES.
At 10.15 p.m., 10 000 people were waiting in front of the MAIN STAGE when DEFTONES opened their "Diamond Eyes" towards the fans and gave the start of their tremendous set. Chino Moreno didn’t stop running, jumping and singing around the stage almost during the whole concert. DEFTONES made one of the best concerts in Bulgaria this year performing songs like "Rocket Skates", "Elite", "Engine No. 9", "Change (In the House of Flies)", "Passenger", "You've Seen The Butcher" and others, according to the setlist of the band, given below. But the show was not still over. At midnight, the London progressive house machines LEFTFIELD started their light and sound show. Paul Daley and Neil Barnes were pioneers in the fields of intelligent dance music and progressive house, being among the first to fuse house music with dub and reggae. Their energetic and powerful set lasted for almost 2 hours to be followed by SCRATCH PERVERTS and after that everything was left in the hands of the DJs who marked the end of the third festival day on MAIN STAGE of SPIRIT OF BURGAS 2011.
JACK DANIEL'S ROCK ARENA
The third day on JACK DANIELS ROCK ARENA started with the performance of DER HUNDS who are Georgi Fidler (drums), Miro "Mravoiada" (bass) and Bobi "Kosatkata" (vocals and guitar). The guys are well-known on the Bulgarian alternative/ grunge rock stage To many people, Bobi's voice reminds on the voice of Chris Cornell. On JDRA, DER HUNDS performed mainly songs from their album "Blue Animals", recorded in the summer of 2008.
DER HUNDS were followed by INSANE, the best Hungarian metal band at the moment and also a winner of "Fonogram" – the most prestigious music award in Hungary in category "Best hard rock/metal album". More than an hour long set, during which the guys proved their class and abilities.
Next in the line–up came AMPLIFIER, who are an alternative progressive and post - rock band from Manchester, England. Many critics describe them as "space rock". The main trio forming the band are the singer and guitarist Sel Balamir - who is of a Turkish decent, the bassist Neil Mahony and the drummer Matt Brobin. The band has released three albums and two EPs since its inception in 1999. On JDRA, their set started with "The Wave" from "The Octopus", followed by "Interstellar", "Airbourne" and songs covering all their albums, showing high professionalism and techniques.
Anneke van Giersbergen and Agua di Annique were the biggest surprise of the third festival night. After her absolutely successful acoustic set together with Danny Cavanagh from ANATHEMA on 29 December 2009 in Sredets Hall in Sofia, she came to Bulgaria for a second time – this time as headliner on the prestigious JDRA at SPIRIT OF BURGAS 2011. Annke performed her latest hit "Hey Ok" as well another songs from her solo album and songs by THE GATHERING. Singing, dancing jumping, playing on various instruments and flirting with the crowd, Anneke awarded us with a night that will be long remember. Her celestial voice enchanted the hundreds of fans in front of JDRA and spectacularly closed the program of the third festival day on "JDRA".
